Duman is a Turkish rock band. The band combines elements of traditional Turkish folk music with modern rock. Duman consists of Kaan Tangöze (vocals and rhythm guitar), Batuhan Mutlugil (lead guitar and backing vocals), and Ari Barokas (bass guitar and backing vocals).Kaan Tangöze began writing songs while living in Seattle in the early 1990s, and performing with a band called Mad Madame. Upon returning to Turkey, he reunited with former classmate Ari and his bandmate in the Blue Blues Band, Batuhan, forming Duman. The band's name, meaning smoke in Turkish, came from one of their first songs, entitled Halimiz Duman. After an initial search for a drummer, they decided to work with session musicians. With the exception of their latest album, the band predominantly worked with drummer Alen Konakoğlu.
Duman has released three studio albums, and a live album. They released their first album, “Eski Köprünün Altında” in 1999 and second, “Belki Alışman Lazım” in 2002. Both albums achieved great success in Turkey and spearheaded a new generation of Turkish rock bands that reached the mainstream. In 2004, they released their live album and DVD, “Konser”. Duman was the first Turkish rock band to release a live concert in DVD format (2004). Their fourth album, “Seni Kendime Sakladım” was released in 2005.
In 2009, Duman have been recording new work in Ireland at Grouse Lodge where famous artists such as Michael Jackson, R.E.M. and Muse have recorded albums in the past. After a 4 year gap between their last album "Seni Kendime Sakladım", they have released not one but two albums simultaenously. These two albums are self titled "Duman I" and Duman II". The albums came out in 18 March 2009. The band have also stated that Cengiz Baysal is their official drummer and that he is the fourth band member as until recently they were a three man band.
